What is a Christmas Pyramid?
Also known as a German Pyramid (Weihnachtspyramide in German, meaning “Christmas Pyramid”), these wooden structures originated in the Erzgebirge mountain region of Germany as a traditional decoration dating back to the 16th century. Many believe that this artform evolved into the Christmas tree of today. A traditional pyramid would typically display the Christian nativity scene in varying detail, but many are used to display a variety of other scenes and artwork. They typically have a center axis rod that rotates from rising candle heat interacting with the paddles on top.
For the 2023 winter season, I developed two of my own laser-cut designs for local craft fairs- a Santa scene and a Nativity scene. In 2024, I introduced a hot-air balloon design, but have retired it for the 2025 season and replaced it with a carousel horse-themed pyramid. While the balloon pyramid has been been retired, I am happy to make them as a special request. They are a bit detailed, delicate, and labor-intensive to assemble, which means I'm not quite ready to try to ship these yet!
If you have purchased a pyramid, we hope you enjoy it for many years. For the best protection, keep it stored in the original box when not in use. As with any candle use, please follow these guidelines for a worry-free experience:
All pyramids have been tested for proper operation. Make sure the blades are fully seated and the center rod spins freely before use. Gently lift the spindle and check that the rod is seated in the metal bearing cup under the platform. The pyramid should be placed on a level surface and away from any moving air that could affect the heat and airflow from the candles. Don’t want to burn the candles? You could place it near an air duct or register to use the natural heat flow of the room to turn the pyramid.
The pyramid uses standard tea light candles that are typically 1/2”-1” tall. Do not attempt to use taller candles for safety. Follow all candle warnings:
Always burn within sight.
Keep away from flammables.
Keep away from children and pets.
NEVER BURN WHILE UNATTENDED.
While most tea light candles typically burn 3-6 hours, they may not produce enough heat as they burn down. Remove excess wax if the wick burns too low or breaks off and does not produce enough heat. Always use the glass cups provided when replacing the candles. Wicks work best when they are about 1/4”-3/8”. A warmer room produces better results than a colder room.
